Passively crowdsourcing images online for measuring broad-scale fly (Diptera) floral interactions and biodiversity

چکیده

Flies (Diptera) represent one of the largest and most important groups pollinators on planet; however, little is known about interactions between flies flowers compared to well-known pollinators, such as bees. Understanding pollinator assemblages key conserving biodiversity ecosystem services, but monitoring Diptera time cost intensive. Using photographs blooming taken by photographers worldwide uploaded internet repositories, we built a dataset 1,275 images fly-flower visitations extracted fly flower taxonomic information, characteristics (shape color), activity (pollen carrying foraging). The resulting shows other biases can still provide an initial overview factors that affect pollination Diptera. We identified 22 families flies, with blow (Family Calliphoridae) representative (29%) 63 flowers, Asteraceae (42%) Apiaceae (21%) abundant. logistic regression models, found likelihood visibly pollen in was determined interaction color shape: pollen-carrying more likely when elongate cluster were green-yellow. Fly foraging mainly color: feed green-yellow white flowers. Overall, Syrphidae less forage for nectar than non-Syrphidae, they be pollen. While exist crowdsourced data, show image data collected through citizen science offer potentially valuable information pollinator-flower augment our understanding

Crowdsourcing Interactions A proposal for capturing user interactions through crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing has been proposed as an inexpensive and often efficient way of outsourcing work tasks to a large group of people. In this paper, we propose to use crowdsourcing as strategy for acquiring users interactions within interactive information retrieval (IIR) systems. We are interested to understand whether crowdsourcing represents a robust strategy that can be used in conjunction with c...

Online Crowdsourcing

With the success of modern internet based platform, such as Amazon Mechanical Turk, it is now normal to collect a large number of hand labeled samples from non-experts. The DawidSkene algorithm, which is based on ExpectationMaximization update, has been widely used for inferring the true labels from noisy crowdsourced labels. However, Dawid-Skene scheme requires all the data to perform each EM ...

Barcoding helps biodiversity fly.

A n essential part of good taxonomy is correctly identifying species. With correct identification, basic research objectives (e.g., correct ecological and evolutionary interpretation; ref. 1) and many practical applications (e.g., effective fisheries management, integrated pest control programs, and the conservation of biodiversity; refs. 2 and 3) are at least attainable. Without it, the odds o...

A Strategy for Measuring Biodiversity

Several recent studies insist that multiplying the indices used to measure biological diversity (or rather, characteristics, related to it) makes no contribution to comparative studies, or to our understanding of the importance and characteristics of the changes caused by anthropic disturbance. In this study we propose a program that we call strategy, in order to measure biodiversity for the pu...

Effects of eucalyptol on house fly (Diptera: Muscidae) and blow fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

The effects of eucalyptol were evaluated against the house fly, Musca domestica L., and blow fly, Chrysomya megacephala (F.). The bioassay of adults, using topical application, indicated that M. domestica males were more susceptible than females, with the LD50 being 118 and 177 microg/fly, respectively. A higher LD50 of C. megacephala was obtained; 197 microg/fly for males and 221 microg/fly fo...
